David Livingstone

(1813-1873), Missionary and explorer

Early Victorian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 40 portraits
The most famous explorer of his age, renowned for his efforts to eradicate the slave trade through legitimate commerce and Christianity. He went to South Africa as a missionary in 1840, and made a series of journeys into the interior; discovering Lake Ngami, in 1849, and the Zambesi in the centre of the continent in 1851, and undertook the epic journey from Cape Town through west central Africa from 1852-56. He commanded expeditions to explore eastern and central Africa in 1858, and spent the last years of his life in search of the sources of the Nile. On an expedition to discover the source of the Nile he was rescued by the journalist H.M. Stanley, 1871. His courage and moral integrity earned him the admiration of many.
