After studying at the Royal College of Art, Piper joined the Seven and Five Society. From 1934 he collaborated on the magazine Axis with writer and librettist Myfanwy Evans, whom he married in 1937. He collaborated on books with W.H. Auden and John Betjeman. In 1946 Piper designed the set for Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, and in 1947 became a founding director of the English Opera Group. His publications include Brighton Aquatints (1939), British Romantic Artists (1942), and Buildings and Prospects (1949). He was also commissioned, with Patrick Reyntiens, to produce stained glass for the Baptistery Window of Coventry Cathedral (1962).
