Walter Runciman, 1st Viscount Runciman of Doxford
(1870-1949), Liberal politician; MP for Dewsbury and St Ives; son of 1st Baron RuncimanSitter in 24 portraits
A prominent Liberal politician from the 1900s until the 1930s. The son of shipping magnate Sir Walter Runciman, he was elected to Parliament as an MP in 1899. He rose through the ranks of the Liberal Party and in 1908 became President of the Board of Education which he held for three years, followed by another three years as President of the Board of Agriculture. Runciman served twice as President of the Board of Trade, from 1914 to 1916 and again from 1931 until 1937. In 1938, Neville Chamberlain sent him to Czechoslovakia to try to obtain a settlement between the Czechoslovak government and the Germans. The mission did not produce immediate results, although it led to the Munich Agreement.
