Tony Benn

(1925-2014), Politician; Chairman of the Labour Party

Anthony Wedgwood ('Tony') Benn

Sitter in 26 portraits
Politician. On the left of the Labour Party, Benn represented Bristol South-East for Labour from 1950-1983. His campaign for the right to disclaim the title Viscount Stansgate, inherited in 1960, which disbarred him from the House of Commons, led to the Peerage Act (1963). He held various posts in government including Minister of Technology (1966-70) and Secretary of State for Energy (1975-9). Benn retired from Parliament in 2001 but remained a prominent political campaigner, and was president of the Stop the War Coalition.
