(1902-1986), Scholar, teacher and writer

Scholar and biographer; A Fellow and Lecturer in Modern History at Wadham College in the 1920s, Cecil left academic life in 1930 to devote himself to writing biography and criticism. He returned and was Professor of English Literature at New College, Oxford University (1948-69); His works include a study of William Cowper, The Stricken Deer (1929), Jane Austen (1935) and two volumes on Lord Melbourne (1939, 1954).
