Thomas Hill

Thomas Hill was trained to draw by the elder William Faithorne, foremost portrait engraver of his day, and he studied painting under the Dutch history painter Dirk Freres. He worked as a portrait painter from around 1694, living in London but travelling around the country to paint his sitters. Many of Hill's commissions were engraved, including several portraits of bishops, including Philip Bisse, Bishop of Hereford, George Hooper, Bishop of Bath and Wells, and William Wake, Archbishop of Canterbury.
