Speller began working as a freelance photographer in 1985 having completed a photography diploma at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art (1981-4). His early portraits appeared in publications such as Blitz, NME, The Face, and Scotland on Sunday. He produced his first cover for Blueprint in 1986 and in 1990 the National Portrait Gallery first began collecting his work. In 2000 with his partner Alison Milner, he set up SpellerMilner design which originates both photography and graphic design.
