Lucas Vorsterman

(1595-1675), Engraver and publisher

Sitter in 4 portraits
Artist associated with 41 portraits
At an early age, Vorsterman entered the studio of Peter Paul Rubens. Recognising his student's talent for engraving, Rubens tasked Vorsterman with creating plates based on his own designs. Vorsterman moved to England in 1623, where he remained until 1631. During this period, he engraved the portraits of King Charles I, Thomas Howard and William Cavendish. He was also commissioned by the king to engrave historical portraits of Sir Thomas More, the Duke of Norfolk and Erasmus. It was while he was in England that Vorsterman first encountered the great painter and designer, Anthony Van Dyck. The two artists later worked closely together on van Dyck's famous series of portrait engravings, Iconography.
