My father was an American bomber pilot, based at Snetterton-Heath, south of Norwich. He went to London on leave occasionally. He sat for portraits at the Studio of Hay Wrightson. Wrightson took a liking to my father and wrote, by hand, a beautiful letter to my grandmother (about whom my father spoke to Wrightson about) telling her that my father seemed burdened and worried in his first sitting. He could not find a smile for any portrait. But on his 3nd visit, Wrightson was pleased to find the subject more relieved and better-spirited. Wrightson was most pleased by that. It is a beautiful letter we have cherished since 1944. I tried to return it to the address on the stationery... Bond Street, I believe, but of course, proprietary had changed. We still have this touching and personal communique that my grandmother always saved and read often.
