Sir Robert Peake

(circa 1605-1667), Printseller and royalist army officer

Sitter in 1 portrait
Artist associated with 65 portraits
Robert Peake was the grandson of Tudor artist Robert Peake the Elder. His father, William Peake, was a printseller, and on his death in 1639, Robert inherited and continued the business. He published many of the finest prints of the 1640s, by engravers including William Faithorne, Edward Pierce and Wenceslaus Hollar. At the outbreak of civil war in 1642, Peake joined the royalist army. He was knighted by Charles I after serving with distinction at Oxford. He was imprisoned and then exiled for refusing to take the oath to Oliver Cromwell.
