Miniature by Maria Clementi taken in Turin for Admiral John Byng (Augustus Hervey’s Journal, 1954, p 59). A bust-length oval miniature attributed to Nathaniel Hone of a youthful Captain remains at Ickworth.

Painting by Francis Hayman, whole-length standing in captain’s uniform taking leave of his family. Ickworth (see B. Allen in The British Portrait, 1991, pp 139-41, illus). H. Gravelot, J-E. Liotard and D. Serres painted other parts of this picture.

Small portraits painted by J-E. Liotard in Paris. In January 1750 Hervey sat to Liotard ‘tho’ the likeness he took looked well, yet I think him no painter … I gave 16 louis for a small picture of me’; in April ‘at the painter Liotard we [Hervey and Madame Caze] met for three hours almost every morning and had our pictures done over and over again for each other’; he gave Madame Caze a case with his picture and in September gave his sister Mary his picture ‘in a bracelet set with diamonds’ (Augustus Hervey’s Journal, 1954, pp 97, 101, 107).
