Doubtful portrait

Pencil sketch, 146 x 82mm, by E.W. Godwin, 25 Nov. 1878, inscr. ‘Exchequer Chamber / Whistler / Albert Moore instructed in Court mutterings of “very true” all round / Mr Burne-Jones said one nocturne had no form or detail …’, head-and-shoulders, back view with other heads, above various notes by Godwin; V&A, London, E.248-1963. Repr. Asleson 2000, pl.148. This sketch from Godwin’s notebook was done during the Whistler–Ruskin libel case and appears to represent spectators in the public gallery, rather than Moore giving the testimony alluded to in Godwin’s note.

The half-length photograph attributed to Frederick Hollyer below was captioned ‘From a photograph by the Artist’ when first engr. by Taylor and repr. MA, 1885, p.192.

Owing to the virtual absence of images of Moore, these two portraits by Hollyer are the prime likenesses in his iconography, and (b) especially has become that by which he is generally known.

Photograph by unidentified photographer, three-quarter-length, half-profile to left, bushy beard, thinning hair, seated with arms and legs crossed; repr. Baldry 1894, with facsimile signature, p.1; and Asleson 2000, pl.82. Sometimes (e.g. Staley 2004) attributed to Hollyer, but it does not appear with others in V&A, London, Hollyer Album 2.
