Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, 1st Bt (1834-1890), Sculptor

Sculptor; born Josef Erasmus Böhm, 4 July 1834, in Vienna. His father was director of the royal mint. Studied in London 1848–51, at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Vienna (medal design and sculpture) 1851–c.1858, and in Paris 1859–62; married Frances Boteler 1860; settled in London from 1862; naturalized British 1865; exh. RA 1862–91; appointed sculptor-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria 1880; elected RA 1881; died 12 December 1890, in Fulham, London, and is buried in St Paul’s Cathedral.

Boehm was a prolific sculptor and an excellent portraitist who adapted himself to British taste and influenced it in turn. In 1890 he was described as follows: ‘a thin, tall and very distingué man, with a beautiful, lithe, elegant figure and a singularly low and musical voice. His eyes were very blue, very kindly in their expression.… He always appeared to be talking to amuse one person only.’[1]

Alfred Gilbert on his mentor: ‘Boehm was a native of Hungary, a handsome, unaffected, polished gentleman, full of humour and dignity. A born actor, a very sincere friend, and an accomplished man of the world.’[2]
