Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, 1st Bt (1834-1890), Sculptor
Boehm was a prolific sculptor and an excellent portraitist who adapted himself to British taste and influenced it in turn. In 1890 he was described as follows: ‘a thin, tall and very distingué man, with a beautiful, lithe, elegant figure and a singularly low and musical voice. His eyes were very blue, very kindly in their expression.… He always appeared to be talking to amuse one person only.’
Alfred Gilbert on his mentor: ‘Boehm was a native of Hungary, a handsome, unaffected, polished gentleman, full of humour and dignity. A born actor, a very sincere friend, and an accomplished man of the world.’
