John Evan Hodgson (1831-1895), Genre painter

Painter; born 1 March 1831, in London. Studied at Royal Academy Schools from 1853; exhibited RA 1856–93, elected ARA 1872, RA 1879; member of the St John’s Wood Clique, living for almost thirty years at 5 Hill Road, where Saturday evening meetings of the Clique took place; [1] his subjects are in keeping with the group’s interests in historical genre paintings; travelled to Africa 1868, after which oriental narratives featured in his work, alongside domestic scenes and portraits; [2] became librarian and professor of painting at the RA 1882; with Fred Eaton wrote an early history of the RA and Fifty Years of British Art to accompany the Royal Jubilee Exhibition, Manchester 1887; died 19 June 1895, near Amersham, Bucks.

He was described as being ‘of a gentle and somewhat retiring disposition, and was endeared to his colleagues by his modesty and sweetness of character’. [3]
