Doubtful portrait
1878
Pencil sketch, 146 x 82mm, by E.W. Godwin, 25 Nov. 1878, inscr. ‘Exchequer Chamber / Whistler / Albert Moore instructed in Court mutterings of “very true” all round / Mr Burne-Jones said one nocturne had no form or detail …’, head-and-shoulders, back view with other heads, above various notes by Godwin; V&A, London, E.248-1963. Repr. Asleson 2000, pl.148. This sketch from Godwin’s notebook was done during the Whistler–Ruskin libel case and appears to represent spectators in the public gallery, rather than Moore giving the testimony alluded to in Godwin’s note.

Possible self-portrait
The half-length photograph attributed to Frederick Hollyer below was captioned ‘From a photograph by the Artist’ when first engr. by Taylor and repr. MA, 1885, p.192.
By other photographers
1854–5
Photograph by unidentified photographer, ‘at the age of fourteen’, probably in York, half-length, nearly full-face, hair parted on left, seated in armchair with heavy book; repr. Baldry 1894, facing p.10; Asleson 2000, pl.2.
c.1885
Photographs by Frederick Hollyer, two known poses:
(a) three-quarter-length, seated, looking forwards, hands in jacket pockets; V&A, London, 7726-1938, Hollyer Album 2.
(b) 163 x 109mm, half-length, seated, near-profile to left looking at camera, dark beard, wearing dark coat, holding palette and brushes; colls V&A, London, 7727-1938, Hollyer Album ‘Portraits of Many Persons of Note’; and RPS, Bath, 14177 (image cropped from right). Exh. as ‘the last likeness of the deceased artist’, Dudley G., Oct. 1893; engr. by R. Taylor repr. MA, 1885, p.192 (captioned as self-portrait); engr. by unidentified engraver repr. as vignette, Graphic, 30 Sept. 1893; and Review of Reviews 1893, p.362; head-and-shoulders only repr. The Year’s Art 1891, facing p.116; engr. by André & Sleigh repr. MA, 1894, p.34 (captioned as self-portrait); photograph repr. Maas 1984, no.244; and Asleson 2000, pl.197.
Owing to the virtual absence of images of Moore, these two portraits by Hollyer are the prime likenesses in his iconography, and (b) especially has become that by which he is generally known.
Undated photograph
Photograph by unidentified photographer, three-quarter-length, half-profile to left, bushy beard, thinning hair, seated with arms and legs crossed; repr. Baldry 1894, with facsimile signature, p.1; and Asleson 2000, pl.82. Sometimes (e.g. Staley 2004) attributed to Hollyer, but it does not appear with others in V&A, London, Hollyer Album 2.
