1) It was apparently Petrie’s wish that after his death his head be preserved for posterity as part of the human osteological series at The Royal College of Surgeons of England; see P.J. Ucko, ‘The Biography of a Collection: The Sir Flinders Petrie Palestinian Collection and the Role of University Museums’, Museum Management and Curatorship, vol.17, no.4, 1998, Appendix A. On the night of his death in 1942 the head was removed from the body in the Government Hospital in Jerusalem. It finally arrived at the College c.1945 – after the end of the Second World War – where it remains in store (EN 46/26). For some time there was confusion surrounding its identity, caused by the particular type of embalming agent used, which discoloured the hair and also had a hydrating effect upon the tissues – giving the appearance of a much younger man. More recent examinations in the 1990s explained the physical appearance of the head, and it is now widely regarded to be that of Petrie: see letter from S. Gibson, Palestine Exploration Fund to Dr C.
