Introduction: Queen Victoria
This large room on the first floor, remodelled by Piers Gough of CZWG in 1996, introduces a sequence of rooms stretching through the whole of the Victorian reign. Full-length portraits of Victoria and Albert flank a sculpture of the couple in Anglo-Saxon dress, lent by H.M. The Queen. Elsewhere is a painting of a Private View of the Old Masters Exhibition at the Royal Academy and a painting of The Landing of HRH The Princess Alexandra at Gravesend. A sculpture wall in three tiers of plinths display 15 plaster and terracotta busts, including portraits of Tennyson and Darwin.
