Painting the Artist: Van Dyck and Early Self-portraiture in Britain

Room 5 The National Portrait Gallery has the best collection of early British self-portraits in the world. This display, the second of three to be held at the Gallery as part of the tour of the recently acquired Van Dyck self-portrait, considers the painting in the context of this fascinating collection. It includes the earliest oil self-portrait painted in Britain, as well as works by Isaac Oliver, Sir Peter Lely and Mary Beale. A highlight will be the striking self-portrait by William Dobson, on loan from a private collection, which hung as a pair with the Van Dyck portrait for 300 years.
