King George III was not an especially unpopular monarch and while Gillray features him in many satirical prints, he is not caricatured in an especially cruel way. For some reason, Gillray reserved a special venom for George III's wife, Queen Charlotte. In Anti-saccharrites, - or - John Bull and his family leaving off the use of sugar (D12933) for example, Queen Charlotte's features are grotesquely exaggerated, with her gap-toothed smile revealing teeth filed to sharp points. In comparison, the features of the king and the royal daughters are only mildly caricatured. The reason for Gillray's animosity to Queen Charlotte is unclear.
