Peninsular and Waterloo officers: watercolour drawings by Thomas Heaphy, 1813-14
32 Portraits in set
A series of whole-length portraits of officers realised in southern France and Spain over a period of 18 months during the Peninsular War. They have bodies and legs outlined in pencil with the heads painted in watercolour, and were studies for a group portrait The Duke of Wellington in Consultation with his Officers previous to a General Engagement (present whereabouts unknown). It was possibly at Wellington's invitation that the artist joined the cavalry staff to make these studies.
