Four studies for 'Patrons and Lovers of Art' (NPG 792): paintings by Pieter Christoffel Wonder, circa 1826-30

4 Portraits in set

Four group portraits painted as preliminary studies for a larger picture of an imaginary gallery hung with pictures from famous collections in England. The idea was conceived by Sir John Murray, who already owned a similar picture of much earlier date. Murray commissioned Wonder to paint the collectors grouped in the foreground and about 40 well-known Old Masters hanging on the walls.
