The Townshend album: drawings by the 1st Marquess Townshend, 1751-58

A collection of caricatures and portrait sketches, drawn between 1751 and 1758. It was acquired, presumably from the artist himself, by his close friend, collaborator and second in command in the Norfolk militia, William Windham II of Felbrigg. Windham pasted them into a large album roughly in chronological order and by subject, so that all the drawings of particular individuals, of boxers and militia men, are more or less together. The National Portrait Gallery album is one of three; the second relates to the Quebec campaign of 1759 and the third is a family album, with additional caricatures by his two sons.
