This is a copy of a lost original showing Lord Bath in his parliamentary robes as an earl. An x-ray taken in 1963 revealed a head under the present one, slightly above and to the right, with a hair style in fashion of c.1810, suggesting that this copy was made in the 19th century. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
