The young prince is depicted wearing the star and blue ribbon of a Knight of the Garter. The painting is a good studio version of a popular portrait of which numerous versions and copies exist. This portrait type was painted in Rome, where the Stuart family was in exile. The portrait was one of several purchased for the collection in 1876, reportedly from the sale of York's secretary, Count Malatesta. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
