This Portrait

One in a series of paintings showing Charles II's 'Escape from the Battle of Worcester', probably commissioned shortly after the Restoration. This portrait focusses on the last part of Charles's escape to the coast which was arranged by Colonel Lane, a Staffordshire gentleman, and his sister Jane. Disguised as Jane's servant, the pair rode Pillion to Bristol where Charles hoped to find a ship to France. He was to remain in hiding for another five weeks before he was able to escape to France.
