During the 1960s, the Gallery acquired two portraits by Patrick Heron: those of T. S. Eliot (1949) and Herbert Read (1950). The self-portrait, painted just a year later, is in the same idiom. In 1997 a further portrait was commissioned from Heron, of the writer A. S. Byatt.
