In command of all the allied cavalry was Henry Paget, Earl of Uxbridge (later Marquess of Anglesey). Wellington had wanted Stapleton Cotton, Lord Combermere, in this role, as had been the case in the Peninsula, but Paget was appointed by the Prince Regent and the Duke of York. Wellington claimed that Paget's elopement with his siter-in-law some six years earlier had not affected his preference.1
