The composer Thomas Arne specialised in opera and pieces for the London theatres and pleasure gardens, but also wrote many catches and songs. 'Rule Britannia' was the finale of his masque Alfred which was performed at Cliveden, the Prince of Wales' house, in 1740. It is this piece of music that the composer is playing on the organ in this etching.
