This self-caricature is inscribed to Frank Suster (1840-1927), music and art lover. Shuster's house at Bray on Thames is the Hut which is referred to in the inscription as the place where artists like Sargent, Percy Anderson, Roger Fry and Max Beerbohm used to meet and 'tend to paint their fellow-guests incliding on sofas, sometimes indeed pretending to read books, but never doing anything useful or noble.'
