This posthumous uniface medal by Lanteri was a tribute to the sculptor, Joseph Edgar Boehm, whose studio Lanteri had joined on coming to England from Paris in 1872. Though posthumous, the boldly modelled head was apparently done from the life. To the side of the head, Lanteri has lightly sketched in a sculptor's mallet and laurels.
Both Lanteri and Boehm were members of the Society of Medallists, founded in 1885. At a time when most medals were struck in large editions, the Society encouraged a revival of interest in cast medals for more limited circulation. James Moore at the Thames Ditton foundry was responsible for casting the British Museum's example of this medal and may have cast this and other medals for Lanteri.
