Poet. Brooke served in the Royal Naval Division but died of blood poisoning on the way to Gallipoli in 1915, and is buried on the Greek island of Skyros. His 1914 sonnets, celebrating the nobility of sacrifice, were reinforced by Schell's romantic photograph, and enjoyed a popularity that survived the disillusionment of trench warfare.
