Landseer and Callcott were close friends and collaborated on a number of pictures. When the 6th Duke of Devonshire commissioned Landseer to paint the Scene in Olden Times at Bolton Abbey, Landseer persuaded Callcott to pose for the head of the abbot. This is a preliminary study, painted 'al prima and exquisitely finished in a sitting of three or four hours'.
