This portrait of Lady Carleton is richly adorned with jewels and a pearl and feather headpiece. On her chest sits a rosette with a large heart-shaped gemstone crested with a coronet. The oval locket pinned to her dress may have contained a portrait minature. It makes a splendid contrast to the sober image of her husband painted at the same time.
