To draw attention to the Queen, a seated figure among many others, Hayter positioned her very carefullly between two prominent standing figures. In this quick early study the artist tries giving her an eye-catching headdress of 'Prince of Wales' feathers. In the finished picture he relies on the use of the profile portrait with a simple white headdress set against a dark backgound.
