In general, portraits of Princess Charlotte as a young adult promoted a belief in her wholesome beauty. A skilful and leading watercolourist, Thomas Heaphy, who enjoyed royal patronage, captured a highly attractive impression of the golden-haired, rosy-cheeked princess in this unfinished study for a later work. In the completed version, signs that recalled her status as a future Queen of England were included, such as a coronet decorated with the Prince of Wales feathers and the Coronation Chair.
