Lord Chesterfield wears the ribbon and star of the order of the Garter over his coat. The portrait is probably a fairly early copy of a type represented by an oil painting at Chevening. There is a similar pastel in the Victoria and Albert Museum. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
