The seventy-year old Lord Chesterfield wears the ribbon of the order of the Garter over his coat. Both Chesterfield and Ramsay were at Ickworth in December 1765, it would seem from a passage in Lady Hervey's correspondence. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
