Edward Julius Detmold was the twin brother and artistic collaborator of Charles Maurice Detmold. Both specialised in images of animals and birds produced as paintings and etchings. This portrait of Edward by Charles was drawn when the brothers were around sixteen, and there is also a companion portrait of Charles by Edward. Charles died in 1908 in his mid-twenties.
