A colourful career in the Boer War and the loss of his eye with the Camel Corps in Somaliland preceded Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart's exploits on the Western Front. He was there wounded eight times, lost his left hand, and awarded the Victoria Cross. In later years his diplomatic skills were employed in missions to Poland and China. Given by wish of Viscount Wakefield, 1968.
