Born in Glasgow, Dick trained at first at the Glasgow School of Art and then at the City and Guilds School of Art in Lambeth in London. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1908 and received many royal commissions before being knighted in 1935. President of the Royal Society of British Sculptors (1935-8), he was also sculptor to George VI (1938-52) and to Elizabeth II until his death in 1961. He is seen in this portrait modelling a figure in his studio.
