The portrait may once have belonged to Gibbs's patron, the Duke of Chandos. It is signed below the right shoulder in black: J. Williams Pinx. The book is lettered ARCHIT and could be either Gibbs's A Book of Architecture (1728), or his Rules for Drawing the Several Parts of Architecture (1732). More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
