An opening batsman and known as 'the Master', Jack Hobbs was the first professional cricketer to be knighted (1953). A career record of 61,237 runs included 197 centuries, 98 of them scored after his 40th birthday. As a subject Hobbs was of particular interest to Sherriffs who was himself an accomplished amateur cricketer.
