Holman resisted pity, and declined to draw attention to his blindness by wearing a dark band around his eyes. Photographed here for Maull and Polyblank's The Literary and Scientific Portrait Club, the ageing Holman holds his cane, which he used to navigate by measuring echoes from its taps.
