Horniman was a pioneer and benefactor of the modern theatre repertory movement who subsidised the Abbey Theatre, Dublin (1904-10) and founded repertory theatre in Manchester (1907-21). Earlier, her subsidy of a season at the Avenue Theatre in 1894 had enabled the actress Florence Farr to commission a new play, Arms and the Man, from the young aspiring playwright George Bernard Shaw.
