This drawing is a variant of one of 1741 in the Royal collection done in Rome by the little known Milanese artist, Francesco Ponzone, which is apparently the portrait described by a contemporary as 'the drawing of ye King done with ye pen, extremely well done and a very good likeness' . More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
