In this portrait he is in uniform as the Colonel of the Royal Scots Regiment of Foot. He wears the Ribbon and Star of the Garter across his chest and the Badge of St Patrick on a green ribbon round his neck. The portrait was probably painted for Sir Mathew Wood, a trustee of the Duke's estate. Bequeathed by Wood's son, Lord Hatherley, 1881.
