The sixth child of Queen Victoria, Louise married the Marquess of Lorne in 1871 and spent five years in Canada (1878-83) when he was Governor-General. A talented sculptor, she avoided royal protocol as far as possible and dedicated herself to her work and issues surrounding the education of women. (Liz Rideal).
