This portrait was painted by the Italian Pompeo Batoni, who specialised in portraits of British sitters on the Grand Tour in Italy. Metcalfe wears a stylish red coat and waistcoat, and holds his hat under his arm; in the background is a view of the Colosseum in Rome.
