Pannett's portrayal of Morrison as the distinguished statesman glosses over the bittersweet end of his remarkable career. In 1955, he felt betrayed when the Labour party leadership passed to Hugh Gaitskill. He retired in 1959 and accepted a life peerage. Entering the House of Lords as Baron Morrison of Lambeth, he fought to stop the abolition of the London County Council, dying in 1969.
The irony of Morrison's career concerns the paradox that his qualities as a 'fly little cockney' powered him to the top of the Labour party, but his close links to London then impeded his ability to attain its national leadership.
