One of the most successful native-born portraitists of the first decades of the eighteenth century, Richardson was the master of Thomas Hudson and George Knapton. His Theory of Painting, published in 1715, inspired the young Joshua Reynolds to become an artist. Richardson, who was an habitual self-portraitist, portrayed himself in this chalk drawing at the age of seventy, bereft of his usual wig or soft nightcap. When Richardson's collection was sold at his son's sale, Horace Walpole noted 'hundreds of portraits of both, in chalks by the father, with the dates when executed; for after his retirement from business the good old man seems to have amused himself with writing a short poem and drawing his own or his son's portrait every day'.
